The Callans coming back aboard [Aug. 14th, 2006|02:13 pm]
Aidan dozed for perhaps an hour before he was woken by Bloodrose's return. After having filled her in briefly on Robin's condition, they spoke to the doctor, who confirmed that she should be ok to return to the ship, provided someone on board could tend to her wounds and see that continued to be treated.

They managed to rouse the younger Callan from her heavy sleep, and after the doctor applied fresh bandages to her torso--the deep slice down her cheek had healed enough that bandages would no longer be necessary--they helped her don the clothing Bloodrose had managed to acquire for her. She still had no boots, but they could deal with that issue later. Taking stock of her when she was clothed once more, Aidan noted silently what a shell of her former self she looked--face thin and pale from blood-loss and lack of food, dark circles under her blue eyes, and the absence of wild spark in those eyes that had always seemed a part of her. It was somewhat disturbing.

After making sure that the doctor had been paid, Aidan scooped Robin from the bed and carried her out of the surgery toward the docks. She buried her face in his shoulder to hide her shame at having to be carried.

Bloodrose split off from them before they reached they reached their destination, saying that she had to take care of one last thing before they set off. As Robin heard the heavy sound of Aidan's boots hit the pier, she stopped him where he stood.

"Aidan, put me down."

"What? Why?" he looked down at her, suddenly confused and concerned for her.

"Twas embarrassin' enough wit' ye carryin' me through Tortuga, bu' I couldn' stan' th' humiliation o' bein' carried onto me own ship. I want t' walk on board by meself. ...Please."

Aidan hesitated. He hadn't thought she might not let him carry her below, and he didn't want her to strain herself too soon. She had only just woken up, after all, and she hadn't even eaten anything yet. But that she still had pride enough to want this was somewhat heartening. "Alrigh'. You c'n walk. Bu' I'll be righ' behind you if you need me."

When she nodded, Aidan carefully set Robin down on her own two bare feet, not letting go of her until he was sure she was steady. They walked up the gang plank to the deck of the ship, Aidan's hand on her shoulder, lest she lose her balance. But when they were aboard, she stopped suddenly, casting her gaze downward, tense.. It may have been her imagination, but she felt as if every pair of eyes was now watching her.

Aidan and Bloodrose at the surgery [Jun. 15th, 2006|01:05 pm]
[Current Mood | drained]

Aidan and Bloodrose had gotten Robin off of the ship as quickly as they could manage after the scene with Dabria and Harry, following the captain to the surgery in town.

The doctor had taken Robin away to a room in the back when they'd arrived, forbidding Aidan accompany her.

But he refused to just leave her, so now he sat on the floor, back against the wall, staring off at nothing. He looked rough. He was still without a shirt, still had spots of dried blood on his chest and arms, and he hadn't shaved since before they'd been taken. Adding to that, he looked as though he hadn't slept in several days.

Aidan was startled out of his contemplation of nothingness by the sound of someone speaking to him. Turning his gaze to Bloodrose, he asked, "What'd ye say?"

Aidan had gone on to the infirmary with Bloodrose upon leaving the scene in the hallway, keeping his hand on her shoulder until they were there. He found Robin on the cot, still unconscious, but partially twisted in the sheets that covered her, as though she had been writhing about in her sleep.

He turned to Bloodrose and said, "If ye could help pick 'er up, we c'n catch up wit' th' captain. I jus' don' wanna rip 'er wounds back open." He purposefully avoided the topic of Sparrow's little revelation. No doubt, there'd be hell to pay for that one later... when she found out that he had already known.

Aidan swung over to the Pearl with Bloodrose and Bailey watching his back. Landing on his feet, as soon as he regained his balance, he made his way to the sickbay as quickly as possible with his sister still hung draped over his shoulder. He bellowed at a couple of men along the way to, "Move!!"

Reaching the sickbay, he shifted Robin back into his arms and rushed to one of the empty cots. Laying her down as gingerly as possible, he called out, "Somebody help her! Please!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It seemed like forever before all of her wounds had been treated. It was a long, arduous process. Besides her shredded back, she'd had a gash on one of her sides, a cut on the other, a slice down her cheek, a branding mark on her back, sun blistered skin, and more bruises than Aidan had cared to count.
He had tried to help with her treatment, though the woman trying to tend her -- Elizabeth was it? -- kept threatening to kick him out for getting under foot.
In the end, they'd had to remove her clothing: Aidan's ruined shirt and Dabria's bloodied skirt. Her upper body was almost completely bound in bandages, though otherwise she was naked beneath the sheet. Her breathing was still unsteady and she had remained unconscious through the entire process.
After the process was finished, Aidan still refused to leave Robin's side. Time had lost all meaning to him, and he had no idea as to when they had finally set sail. He sat by her side, keeping watch over her.
Eventually, physically and emotionally exhausted, he had fallen asleep. Having turned his back to lean against the cot, he sat with his knees drawn up and his arms crossed over them. He dozed with his chin resting on his chest.
Aidan stormed out of the bar, getting away from the pathetic excuse for a pirate as quickly as possible before he changed his mind and decided that pounding him was worth whatever wrath he might incur from the captain.. Behind him, he heard Bloodrose coming after him.
Unable to control the frustration and anger bubbling up inside him any longer, he started yelling and cursing.
"Damn it!! What the bloody hell is going on??" He wheeled around to face her. "The master gunner is friends with th' feckin' enemy?? The prisoner says he don't know anythin' and th' cap'n jus' says, 'Alrigh' then, tell me 'bout Port Royal instead'?? And that's it?? He doesn' bloody ask what Robin 'ad that was so important? He didn' say 'I think ye're lyin'' or ask 'im why he called Robin 'he'?? What the hell is going on??!" His chest was heaving and his hands were balled into fists, and his face was so red that it was practically glowing.
((Short and sweet... but my muse just wants action)) [Nov. 10th, 2005|04:51 pm]
Aidan sat back with his chair tilted back on its back legs, his empty tankard sitting in front of him on the table. He was grumpy and miserable and rather felt like pounding the living daylights out of someone. At this point he almost didn't care who.
With a general grumble, he brought the chair down hard on its four legs.
He ran a hand over his face. He was scruffy. He hated being scruffy. That made him even more grumbily... and it was a good thing he didn't have a mirror handy.
Looking over at Sam, he said, "Ye said somethin' 'bout restockin' supplies?"
[Current Mood | depressed]
Aidan wasted no more time in doing what he'd been trying to do for what seemed like the past bloody hour. Too many emotions were raging through him for any one word to accurately describe the way he felt.
Angry, frustrated, sad, hurt, irritated, confused, miserable... were a few.
Reaching his cot, he all but ripped the shirt from his back, quickly stripping free of all clothing, save his breeches. He kicked his boots beneath the edge of the cot violently and tilted back the open bottle of rum, letting it burn down through his throat for a full ten seconds before coming up for air.
Aidan threw Robin's and his own weapons down onto the bed emptied his pockets, throwing down coins and fairly random knick-knacks. Coming upon a scrap of paper, he frowned down at it, trying to remember what the hell it was. Turning it over, he read the words and a cold wave rushed over him as he remembered Robin pressing it to his hand and promising to explain everything later. He tilted the bottle back up as he stared at the scrap of paper and tried to think of what it could mean.
Finally, with a frustrated sort of growl, Aidan threw himself down onto the deck, grabbing Robin's pistol on his way down. So, there he sat, back against the wood of the ship, 3-quarters-empty rum bottle in one hand, a note of scrawled French in the other, and an un-loaded pistol lying in his lap, as the effect of the alcohol began to take hold and he sank into himself.
And there he would likely remain until somebody saw fit to do something about it.
[Current Mood | angry]
Aidan headed below deck with one thought on his mind... to find several bottles of rum and a nice quiet spot and then just to drink until he could no longer think or feel. He was angry and he was bitter and nothing at all like his usual self.
He made his way quickly to the galley, avoiding all attempts at conversation by those he passed along the way. Several people stopped and began whispering to each other after he'd passed them, no doubt discussing how he was the brother of that one who'd been taken.
When we walked into the galley, he found the prone body of an Adian sailor lying in a pool of blood. He was clearly dead. Rage suddenly bubbled up inside of Aidan at the sight of him and he began kicking the body over and over. Finally, he stopped, realizing how useless this was. He hadn't taken Robin. He was dead. Frowning, he stepped over the body and grabbed himself a bottle of rum. Uncorking it, he took a long swallow, savoring the slow burn down his throat. He grabbed a second and headed for the brig, not expecting it to be occupied.
From behind him, he heard a familiar voice calling his name. He turned around, ready to tell whoever it was to just piss off and leave him alone. He was not in the mood. Aidan stopped short, however, when he realized who it was. "Bloodrose," was all he said as he avoided her eyes.
[Current Mood | awake]
As an ocean breeze blew across his face, Aidan stirred slightly. But it wasn't enough to wake him completely from his peaceful slumber. But the voice was. He heard it, but he didn't understand the words. It sounded like Robin. Yawning, he cracked open his eyes. It was still very early morning. Blinking a few times to clear the sleep from his eyes, Aidan glanced around him to try to remember where he was and how he'd gotten there. His head was still muddled from sleep, so it took a moment.
Looking down, he noticed a few rum bottles rolling around the deck beside him. Ah, right, there'd been music and merriment and such. He'd sat down here on deck after becoming pleasantly tipsy. Less than a bottle later... he must have passed out or just simply fallen asleep.
But... he hadn't been drinking alone. He remembered now. He and Bloodrose had been talking. She'd finally said that she did believe him after all, when he told her he'd had nothing with Dabria. And then... they'd pulled out a few bottles of rum and joined in the fun. He was just starting to wonder what had become of her...
Then it dawned on him that there was a weight pressing against his other side, and looking down he couldn't help but smile. Because there with her head laying on his right shoulder was Bloodrose, out like a light. It was a very comfortable, pleasant feeling sitting there, and he wouldn't have minded sitting like that all morning. He was half-tempted to put his arm around her and pull her closer, but he didn't have the chance. Across the deck, Jack came half-staggering out of the hatch, his eyes on the horizon, Aidan followed his gaze and caught sight of what he was seeing... a red sky and thick grey clouds gathering. Bloody great. Just what they didn't need.
As the captain bellowed his call for hands, Aidan reached his left hand up and touched Bloodrose's face. "Wake up, love. Duty calls."
comment to Bloodrose [Jan. 26th, 2005|03:35 pm]
Aidan swallowed down a lump in his throat and murmured, barely audible, "Oh, what lies lurk in kisses." He'd heard the quote years ago... or had read it... he couldn't even remember now who had originally said it. Interesting that it should pop into his brain at this particular moment.
"Oh, 'course i's my fault," he said, unable to keep himself from shooting a bit of hurt sarcasm back Bloodrose's way, in spite of himself. "Ye migh' be surprised. People do thin's fer unlikely reasons. Like fear, anger, frustration, jealousy..." he trailed off, that last word he was referencing to Bloodrose, though, rather than Dabria. His expression was flat. And neither did he seem particularly amused when she laughed at her own sarcasm.
"Tha' bar wench was my frien' when I 'ad no others. An' I kept 'er company on some o' th' more difficult evenin's. Bu' as frien's only. She's my mate. I 'ad though' I could have tha' wi' ye as well, at least. Though' tha's what ye wanted. Bu' I guess I was wrong." Though he tried to mask it, Aidan was unable to keep the hurt expression from his face entirely.
What else could he say to Bloodrose that could satisfy her? He couldn't tell her what had really happened, not without revealing Dab's secret. He didn't even feel like he could tell her that Dab had kissed him out of anger at Jack. She'd want to know why Dab was angry at Jack in the first place. There'd always be another question, it seemed.
Aidan took a step back. "I'm sorry," he said. "If ye can' believe me abou' this, I'll jus' leave ye alone." It hurt to say it. He didn't want to leave her alone. He wanted to grab her and to kiss her and for that moment with Dab to be little more than a memory. He wouldn't betray his friend, and arguing about this was like trying to beat down a brick wall. He made as if to turn away, hoping that she'd stop him, say something, anything.
After Lunch [Dec. 13th, 2004|11:43 am]
((Being that this is exam week, I really shouldn't be posting like this, but my muses are tired of inaction.))
Seeing that Bloodrose seemingly planned to continue ignoring him, Aidan didn't really figure there was much use just sitting there, especially since everyone else he knew had already gone as well. He did wish he'd had a chance to speak to Hugh. He'd barely seen the man since they'd started out. After he finished his stew, Aidan thanked Sam and handed over the bowl, then said, "I s'pose I'll be headin' up then," to no one in particular.
He went up on deck, and after not immediately seeing anyone to talk to, he made his way over to the ship's railing and pulled himself up, seating himself there and stretching out one leg along the length of the rail while keeping himself balanced with one hand on the ratlines. He did it in a matter of seconds with the ease of someone long accustomed to life on a ship. Aidan closed his eyes and enjoyed the feel of the wind on his face, willing himself to forget the discomforts of the morning.
Morning Thoughts [Nov. 10th, 2004|12:40 pm]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]
Aidan secured the lines, then leaned back against the railing with a sigh. He'd awoken this morning with a bittersweet sort of feeling. He knew he should still be upset with Jack, and especially with Dab, after what had happened the previous day, and on some level he was, but he just couldn't bring himself think think about that now. He'd woken up extraordinarily relaxed and refreshed this morning, and he had no doubts in his mind as to why that was.
Aidan smiled to himself and glanced over at Bloodrose, who was working across the way. But, though he'd woken refreshed, there was still the matter of the bitter that went along with the sweet. And that was that he'd have to proceed further with caution. He'd spooked Bloodrose with his admission of love, and that coupled with her being upset about Dabria's kiss would mean that he'd be walking on pins and needles to keep everything at a happy balance. Not to mention that it would just further complicate the situation with Dabria.
Bloodrose would likely be suspicious of every moment he spent with the girl. But he couldn't just avoid Dab forever. The ship wasn't that big.
Aidan stood there, now staring off into space more than actually watching Bloodrose. He mulled everything over in his mind, examining the situation from every which way, and trying to figure out to do about it.
As if his thoughts had summoned her, Aidan was snapped out of his daze by the sound of his name being spoken. "'Ello Aidan." He turned and glanced over.
"Oh, 'ello Dab."
((If anyone wants to catch themselves up on Bloodrose and Aidan's rather lengthy post, they can find it here. Also, [info]dabria, I hope you don't mind me dragging you in here.))
[Current Mood | morose]
The moment Aidan stepped through the door leaving Jack's cabin, he felt a great bit of relief at being free of the situation. But, no sooner did the rush of relief hit him, than a new wave struck him... one comprised of sadness, some bit of frustration, and an intense desire to just get away from people... at least for a while. He needed to get to his own cabin. And, while the main deck wasn't exactly crowded, there were too many people about for comfort.
Quickly, he made his way from the cabin, toward the hatch. Perhaps a little too quickly. In his haste, he knocked into somebody as he went, and he turned to see who it was. His brows were creased in a frown at this further delay, until he saw who it was. When Bloodrose's face registered in his mind, his face softened a bit. "'m sorry," he muttered, turning away and heading back toward the hatch, a little slower this time.
He wasn't sure why, but when he saw her then, the first thought to cross his mind was that he hoped she hadn't seen what had happened earlier with Dab. He really hoped she hadn't, but he wasn't sure as to why.
Aidan had descended through the hatch, taking the stairs two at a time, and made it to his cabin. He pushed the door closed, but it didn't close completely... standing open about 4 or 5 inches. He laid down his weapons and stripped out of his shirt and boots. (He'd begun to feel somewhat warm.) With the evening setting in, it was fairly dark in the cabin, but he didn't bother to light a candle.
Then, he sat himself on the deck, settling down with a bottle of rum he'd acquired, with his back against the wall. Almost as soon as he'd felt the wood against his skin, the anger that had occupied a large part of his thoughts began to seep out of Aidan. There was something about the feel of a ship under his bare feet and against his back that was just calming. In the place of the anger was left hurt, confusion, and some amount of sadness at the thoughts of his mother... and to some extent, his youth.
He lifted the bottle to his mouth and took a swallow. He sat with his knees drawn up as he had in Jack's cabin. After a few more drinks of the spicy liquid, he crossed his arms over his knees and rested his forehead against them with a sigh, the bottle hanging from his fingers.
He sat like that for awhile... how long he wasn't sure of... until he heard a creak of the door, and he lifted his head to see who was there.
Aidan climbed up on deck after he left the galley. Standing by the hatch, he surveyed his surroundings contentedly. Clear sky, nice breeze, it looked like smooth sailing today. Oh, how he'd missed this. A month was far too long to spend away from the sea. He took a deep breath and sighed. He wondered to himself where Robin had gotten to, surprised he hadn't run into her yet today. And Hugh, hadn't seen him yet either. Gazing around the ship, he noticed someone sitting near the railing sewing a piece of canvas. He smiled as he realized that it was Dabria. The one familiar face he had seen thus far today.
Her back was to him, so she didn't notice Aidan as he walked up behind her. Leaning down slightly over her, he held an apple out in one hand in front of Dab and said, "Would th' hard-workin' lass like a bite t' eat?"
Aidan called out to the guys he'd been working with. "I'm gonna 'ead below and dig up somethin' t' eat. See ye later." He turned and headed for the hatch. The men were some of those that were already part of the crew when they pulled into port. Seemed like good men. Aidan scrambled down hatch and walked into the galley. Humming a random song to himself, he lifted a few of the lids and scraped together a small meal of salt pork, a lime, a bit of tack, and an apple. He bipassed the rum for later and ladeled himself a bit of water into a cup.
As he was poking around, he heard a crunch, and looking down saw some broken glass around the floor. Ah well. Someone had probably had a bit too much to drink and lost his bottle. He'd see about cleaning it up after he ate. He settled himself on a crate, his back against a post, and had at his food. A few minutes later, he was interrupted when someone else walked into the galley. He grinned in greeting and swallowed the food in his mouth. "G'day," he said. "Join me?"
Aidan followed Bloodrose and Robin up to the Pearl, content for the moment with letting the women lead the way. But, when they reached the deck, he stepped up around Robin... then stopped. Where in the blazes had everybody gone?? Dab was no where to be seen... actually, he wondered if he'd ever actually seen her at all, or if his eyes had been playing tricks on him. The captain was gone now, as well. "Damn," he mutterred under his breath. A full day gone, and he hadn't gotten so much as two words in with the captain. But, at least he had a guaranteed spot on the ship... Robin and Bloodrose, however did not yet have that luxury. Everyone else seemed to be gone, too. Not even Hugh was anywhere to be seen.
He looked around him. The deck seemed to be fairly well deserted... unless there were some stray pirates hiding behind crates or something. He glanced back at the women and shrugged. Then, not really knowing what else to do, he took a chance and called out, "Captain!?" With any luck, even if Sparrow didn't hear him, someone else would who could point him in the right direction.
((err... this is me not knowing what else to do but needing to do something. Umm... and Bloodrose and Robin still have to confirm their spots on the ship...))
Headed for the Pearl [Jun. 9th, 2004|02:46 am]
[Current Mood | curious]
Aidan was walking down the streets of Tortuga towards the docks. He'd slept much later than he'd intended to today. He'd wanted an early start getting to the Pearl, but it hadn't happened. Somehow, he'd let himself sleep until nearly noon. Then, after he'd gotten dressed and cursed himself profusely for stupidity, he strapped on his sword, stuck his pistol in his belt, and gathered his belongings into a sack, which he slung over his shoulder, and he headed out... stopping by the front desk to check out officially. He was desperately hoping that his gamble of having a place to stay on the Pearl would work out.
First place he headed after checking out was to the Laughing Sailor. He remembered that he'd promised Dabria that he would stop by to let her know the outcome of his talk with Sparrow. It was a shame she would be left stuck on this blasted island. He'd miss seeing her around. She was always nice to talk to when he was bored or lonely.
But when he got to the pub and stepped inside, something was definitely amiss. For one thing, there was an obvious lack of help, and didn't see Dab anywhere around. He'd walked up to the bar and hollered for Selks, who he could hear moving around in the next room. "'Ey, Selks! 'Ave ye seen Dabria around? Is she off?" As a reply, he received a mug aimed at his head, which he narrowly managed to dodge, and which instead smacked another patron in the noggin. Aidan looked down in shock, then back up towards Selks, and once again narrowly dodged a mug. He quickly made a bee-line for the door, yelling as he went, "I take it she's not here!" and dodging cups and various other items the whole way.
One last mug struck the door frame as he bolted out the door and finally stopped, panting and wondering what the hell that was all about. Shaking himself off and straightening himself out, he turned and headed back down the road. With any luck, he'd run into Dab sometime before they pulled out of port, though he didn't know how or when.
He was nearing the docks now. He could see the Pearl clearly from where he stood. A few people stood on deck... Jack he could make out plainly, even at this distance. Another... he thought looked like Hugh, though he couldn't be sure. And then there was a shorter third person with them, who seemed to be delivering crates of something or another... he noticed the sun glint off of the red in their hair.
As he got closer, the delivery person he could finally recognize as being female... and Jack was staring down at something, looking worried, or perhaps confused. He was nearing the gangplank now and saw two figures standing on the docks... a tall gangly fella who appeared to have a false eye, and another tallish man who was somewhat older and was staring down the gangly one.
Looking between the arguing pair on the dock and the seemingly distressed captain on the ship, Aidan decided that he would just sit tight for the time being. He didn't want to be caught in the middle of a fight between the two... and the captain did not appear particularly ready to welcome new recruits. As it were, he took a seat on a nearby crate and watched the events unfold in front of him.
((I apologize for the separate post, but I thought things might get a little confusing if I posted this as a reply. It also leaves an opening, should Bloodrose and Robin stumble upon him...))
